How does sitting all day affect your posture?

The short answer

Sitting for long stretches can leave some muscles short and others weak, and over time the body can settle into a pattern of imbalance through the hips, spine and shoulders. Most people don’t realize it is happening, and even a slight misalignment can cause problems. AlignSmart® measures 20 points of your alignment and gives you a Symmetry Score, so you can see the pattern and build a plan to correct it.

Dealing with back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica or hip pain?

Many people in this position live with back pain, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica or hip pain and never find out whether their alignment is part of the picture. AlignSmart® doesn’t diagnose or treat any condition. It measures how your body is balanced, so you and your care team can see whether alignment may be contributing.

If you are in pain, talk with your doctor too. Alignment data works best alongside the care you already have.

Why doesn’t a good chair or standing desk settle it?

Ergonomic gear helps, but it can’t tell you how your body is actually aligned. Two people in the same chair can be balanced very differently.

A standing desk changes the position, not the pattern your body has already built. The only way to see that pattern is to measure it.

Where desk posture tends to show up

Neck & shoulders

Screens pull the head forward and the shoulders round.

Hips & pelvis

Hours seated change how the hips and pelvis sit and move.

Lower back

When the hips and pelvis shift, the low back can pick up the slack.

Everywhere else

One area compensating can show up somewhere far from the cause.

How does AlignSmart® help?

Symmetry for Health follows four steps, built around prevention rather than waiting for pain.

  1. MeasureThe patented AlignSmart® device captures 20 points across three planes of motion and produces your Symmetry Score, from 0 to 81.
  2. EducateYour practitioner shows you exactly where your body is compensating and why, in plain language.
  3. CorrectYou get a custom correction plan built for your structure, not a generic handout.
  4. EmpowerYou learn how to keep your alignment, so the changes last.

Does this replace my ergonomic setup, chiropractor or PT?

No. AlignSmart® works with your setup and your care team, not instead of them. It adds objective data about your structural alignment, so your desk, your exercises and your providers are all working from better information.

Your questions, answered

Why do so many desk workers have posture problems?

Sitting for hours shapes how the body is balanced, and most people don’t notice the change until something bothers them. Measuring alignment shows the pattern before it becomes a habit your body can’t shake.

Can I tell if my body is out of alignment on my own?

Not reliably. Most people don’t realize they are misaligned, and even a slight degree can cause problems. That is why Symmetry for Health uses objective measurement rather than a visual guess.

Can alignment affect back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica or hip pain?

Alignment can be one piece of the picture. When the body is out of balance it compensates, and that can show up as back, shoulder or hip pain, or pain that travels the way sciatica does. Symmetry for Health is not a medical provider and does not diagnose, so see your doctor about pain. AlignSmart® adds objective alignment data.

What happens in an AlignSmart® assessment?

Your practitioner measures 20 points across three planes of motion, explains your Symmetry Score and what it shows, and builds a correction plan around your structure.

I already see a chiropractor, PT or massage therapist. Should I still come in?

Yes, if you want to see your alignment data. AlignSmart® is designed to work alongside your existing care team.

I already have a standing desk. Do I still need to be measured?

A standing desk changes your position, but it doesn’t show how your body is aligned. Many people find it useful to see their data and then decide what to change.

Where can I get measured near Sacramento?

Symmetry for Health is in Folsom, CA, and serves people from Roseville, El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, Rocklin, Cameron Park and greater Sacramento.

Pain areas people come to us about, and what better alignment can change.

People come to Symmetry for Health with jaw and neck pain, headaches, shoulder and upper back pain, elbow, wrist and hand pain, mid back and low back pain, sciatica, tailbone and pelvic pain, hip pain, knee pain, and ankle and foot pain. Others come for spinal curves, scoliosis patterns, disc-related back pain, or strains and injuries that keep coming back. Pain often shows up far from where it starts, so measuring the whole body matters. See everyone we help.

Move better

When your joints stack the way they were designed to, everyday movement, workouts and play take less effort.

Sleep better

Many people report sleeping more comfortably once their body stops working so hard to compensate.

Feel better

Less strain can mean more energy, better focus and an easier mood through the day.

Lower your injury risk

Measuring alignment shows where your body is overloaded, so you can address it before it becomes a strain or sprain.

AlignSmart® does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. If you have pain, talk with your doctor. Alignment data works best alongside the care you already have.
